Danilo Marcondes

Abstract

We examine the first contact of European navigators and settlers with the tribes of the New World, which may be considered as leading to a skeptic question on the universality of human nature. Five representative texts are selected and discussed especially regarding the physique of these peoples.

Danilo Marcondes, Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF)

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (1975), a master’s degree in Philosophy from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (1977), and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of St. Andrews (1980). In 2008, he was an associate director of studies at the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (Paris, France); in 2009, he was a visiting researcher at Brown University, Providence, RI, USA; and in 2011 (January–February), he was a visiting professor at the University of Paris-X. CNPq I-A Researcher (2000). He is currently an associate professor at the Federal University of Fluminense (40hsDE) and a retired full professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. He served as president of the North American Association for the History of the Language Sciences from 2010 to 2012. His main areas of research include: philosophy of language (pragmatics and discourse analysis), history of skepticism in modern philosophy, and applied ethics. He served as coordinator of the Philosophy/Theology area at CAPES (2011–2014). He coordinated the interdisciplinary project “Ethics and Contemporary Reality,” funded by Finep/Faperj/Cnpq (www.era.org.br), from 2011 to 2016 at PUC-Rio. He served as Central Coordinator for Internationalization at PUC-Rio under the Office of the Provost (2012–2022). He coordinated the project “Trends in Modern Skepticism,” funded by Faperj (2018–2022). He served as Central Coordinator (Vice Rector) for Graduate Studies at PUC-Rio (2022–completed). He is the coordinator of the “Politiquês Colloquium” Extension Project (2022–2024) at UFF.
