Belief as an impression of reflection on David Hume’s Philosophy

Abstract

In this paper, I present an interpretation of the place of belief in Hume's epistemology. To this end, I begin by introducing the definitions of belief offered by the philosopher (section 1). I then explain the questions that these definitions have raised among commentators (section 2). Next, I discuss the interpretation that belief is defined by the force and vividness of an idea, exploring its inconsistencies (section 3). Finally, I propose that, in order to resolve them, in Humean philosophy, belief should be understood as an impression of reflection (section 4).
