Imagination, Political Freedom, and Affects. The Principle of the Common in the Institution of the Political Community

Abstract
This article argues that imagining the institution of new political communities depends on our integrating the role of affects into our conceptual universe of life in common. To articulate this idea, I seek to think—through Arendt’s notion of the principle of beginning—the foundation of a new political community from the political principle of the common, understood as a principle of beginning that inaugurates and sustains political community. If, as I maintain in this text, the political principle of the common is understood as joint action and decision grounded in deliberation—through which people strive to determine together how to live in common—then it becomes essential to reclaim the possibility of new beginnings, based on political freedom and imagination understood in connection with affects.
