Dreams in Modern Philosophy - Descartes and The Melon

Abstract
The article argues that imagination plays a positive role in Cartesian thought.
To this end, it investigates the traces of oneiric procedures present, albeit hidden,
in his work. It thus seeks to recover what Luci Buff calls the “nocturnal” aspect
underlying the diurnal, luminous face of his system. This aspect emerges both in the
expository method of the Meditations and in his moral therapy, developed mainly
in his correspondence with Elisabeth of Bohemia and in The Passions of the Soul.
Drawing on the secondhand account, compiled by Adrien Baillet, of Descartes’
three dreams of 1619, a curious oneiric apparition will guide this approach: the
image of the melon, which points to the spherical complementarity between sleep
and wakefulness.
