Abstract

In this paper, I intend to analyze the love plot of the novel Grande Sertão: veredas, in order to demonstrate its connection with the epic plot (the wars between jagunços). I try to describe how Guimarães Rosa develops a dialectic between two extremes: carnal love, or erotic desire, symbolized by the prostitute Nhorinhá, and spiritual love, or romantic passion, symbolized by the bride Otacília. The protagonist's relationship with these two characters is crossed by the jealousy of his friend Diadorim, an expression of a forbidden love in which those two extremes are interconnected. Based on certain passages of the novel, I discuss the characterization of Diadorim as a symbol of maximum ambiguity, which is the articulating principle of the narrative. The mixture of opposing elements (feminine and masculine, delicacy and ferocity, hatred and desire) articulates the love plot not only with the epic plot of the novel, but also with its metaphysical-religious theme (the speculation about God and the devil).

Author Biography

Pedro Süssekind, Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF)

He holds a BA in Philosophy from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1997), an MA in Philosophy from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (2000) and a PhD in Philosophy from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2005). He did his doctoral research in the Department of Comparative Literature at the Freie Universität in Berlin. He currently holds a CNPQ Research Productivity grant (level 2), is an Adjunct Professor in the Philosophy Department at the Fluminense Federal University and a collaborator in the Master's Degree in Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art at the Federal University of Ouro Preto. He has experience in Philosophy, with an emphasis on Aesthetics, History of Philosophy and Contemporary Philosophy, working mainly on the following subjects: German aesthetics, poetics, philosophy of history and critical theory.
