Infocracy and Psychopolitics in Byung-Chul Han: Ethical-political perspectives on the digitalization of life

Abstract

The characterization of the Performance Society elaborated by Byung-Chul Han points to the emergence of new power dynamics and subjectivation processes, in line with the demands of contemporary capitalism mediated by digital information and surveillance technologies, operationalized by artificial intelligence algorithms. This article investigates the challenges for contemporary democracy, which moves towards infocracy and psychopolitics, presenting the perspectives of a politics of inactivity and an ethics of alterity as ways of confronting the digitalization of life.

Author Biography

Leandro Chevitarese, Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ)

He has a degree in Philosophy from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (1997), a master's degree in Philosophy, in the area of Philosophy of Culture, from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (2000), a master's degree in Psychosociology of Communities and Social Ecology, in the area of Environmental Ethics, from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2003) and a doctorate in Philosophy, in the area of Ethics, from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (2005). He is currently Associate Professor of Philosophy at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, in the Department of Education and Society. Professor of Philosophy at the UFRRJ (PPGFIL), in the Research Line: Subjectivity, Ethics and Politics. He has experience in Philosophy, Education and Society, with an emphasis on Ethics, working mainly on the following subjects: Schopenhauer, Will and Freedom; Foucault, Power Relations and the Production of Subjectivity; Byung-Chul Han, Performance Society, Technology and the Digitalization of Life. Coordinator of the Research Group “Ethics, Power Relations, Subjectivity and Technology” (UFRRJ). Member of the “Philosophy of Technology” Research Group (PUC-Rio). Member of the Schopenhauer Society in Brazil (Brazilian section of the Schopenhauer-Gesellschaft). Member of the support group for the Schopenhauer WG at ANPOF.
