Ecstasy, Parody, Montage: the murder of Vladimir and the theory of the image of Sergei Eisenstein

Abstract

This article discusses the theory of the image proposed by the filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein (1898-1948) focusing the scene of the assassination of Vladimir Staritski in the second part of the film Ivan the Terrible (1945). According to Eisenstein, this scene would be the highest point of all his work, since in it one could find a materialization of his theses on the creation of artistic images. Looking at some of the filmmaker's reflections on this key moment in his artistic and theoretical work, we try to analyze the procedures adopted in this scene, taking as references the notions of MLB (return to the womb), ecstasy, parody and montage.

Vanessa Teixeira de Oliveira, Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO)

Possui doutorado em Artes Cênicas pela Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (2010), mestrado em Teatro pela mesma instituição (2004) e graduação em Direito pela Universidade Federal do Ceará (1998). Linha de Pesquisa: Poéticas da Cena e do Texto Teatral. Atualmente é professora adjunta do Departamento de Teoria do Teatro e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Artes Cênicas da Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO), chefe do Departamento de Teoria do Teatro e é uma das líderes do grupo de pesquisa Investigações em Teatro e Outras Artes. Tem experiência em Artes, com ênfase em Teatro, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: estética e teoria do teatro, teoria e história do cinema, cinema e teatro, cinema e pintura, teatro e artes visuais, dramaturgia. Além das atividades de pesquisa e ensino, tem experiência na área de gestão pública como Coordenadora de Fomento Direto da Agência Nacional do Cinema (ANCINE) (2008-2012).
